Design Assembly began life in August 2008 as a graphic design event in Auckland. An evening of talks and discussion run by graphic designers for graphic designers.
The evenings provide the opportunity to listen to three speakers covering a wide variety of topics relating to graphic design, with the purpose of educating and inspiring and for graphic designers to mingle and connect with each other.
In just over a year, Design Assembly has become an integral part of the New Zealand graphic design community as an event and web based forum for design conversation.
Created by graphic designer Louise Kellerman, alongside the Design Assembly events that occur four times a year in Auckland, it also exists online, with a panel of regular contributors sparking lively discussion around local graphic design issues.
Design Assembly recently celebrated its first birthday in Auckland on September 30th with David Gardener and Andrea Wilkinson from Wintec, Hamilton talking about their project: When an outcome becomes outcomes; the means project (http://www.designproject.co.nz/themeans/exhibition_concept.html), Meena Kadri from Wellington educating the audience about: Indo-centric, typo-centric: Hand-lettered typography from the streets of India (http://www.randomspecific.com) and Toby Curnow from ALT Group, Auckland looking at grids and tessellation’s in art and design and their influence on the studio’s output.
Louise’s plans for the continuing development of Design Assembly in 2010 include the expansion of the quarterly events to Wellington and the development of a series of workshops in both Auckland and Wellington.
Design Assembly has been and is a labour of love for its creator Louise Kellerman and colleague Shaun Lee. Giving their time on a pro bono basis they have created the live events and website with a strong belief in the value of Design Assembly to the New Zealand graphic design community.
Design Assembly is a not-for-profit community organisation and it has been through a core of five great sponsors; AUT, Spicers Paper, mychillybin.co.nz, endemicworld.com and Gordon Harris, that quarterly events have been enabled and are free to attend.
Now heading into its second year, Design Assembly is looking for further sponsorship to fund the development and management undertaken by Louise Kellerman and Shaun Lee in an ongoing and sustainable manner.
ProDesign Magazine has come onboard as the media partner of Design Assembly and Portfolio Recruitment have joined as a core sponsor alongside the ongoing support of AUT, Spicers Paper, endemicworld and Gordon Harris.
The next Design Assembly event is set for November 18th in Auckland. To celebrate the end of the year it will be held at the Ponsonby Social Club and places will be limited. Keep an eye out for the details - www.designassembly.org.nz
Design Assembly serves the community of New Zealand Graphic Designers and is dedicated to the sharing of ideas, information and inspiration with the aim of strengthening graphic design in New Zealand.
