Emily Kerse is one of Air New Zealand fashion week’s newest stars. 2009 was her first week displaying her collection in the big white tents over in Auckland’s magical Viaduct Harbour. Emily started sewing when she was 6 years old and has never looked back; “Fashion design just happened” she tells us. Her latest collection is 100% New Zealand made displaying a strong line that would make any New Zealander proud. One of her greatest career highlights was when one of her designs was worn at New York Fashion Week. Although Emily has also spent some time overseas she really enjoys being creative here in New Zealand.
Although this talented kiwi is situated in the south island of New Zealand, where she has many stockists, her trends are recently starting to cotton on and into the north island boutiques. In my opinion Emily Kerse will be one of New Zealand’s contemporary leading designers. During the New Zealand Fashion Week celebrations I sat down with the young and innovative kiwi to get the scoop on her latest line. Here is what she had to say.
What motivates you to get out of bed on a cold morning?
Knowing there is sooo much to do – Being a designer. It’s not hard to get out of bed in the morning.
Do you aspire to be like anyone?
My Nana – Everyone loves my Nana. She has an amazing character and dress sense.
What have been your greatest accomplishments so far?
Having one of my dresses worn at New York Fashion Week, Sonya Grey wore one on TV one recently, another being worn in a House and Garden magazine due out later this year.
What is something people don’t know about you?
I love making homemade jam and bread – This is part inspiration for my collection “Letters from Isla may”. The collection is comfortable and easy to wear, good looking and has a vintage feel.
What can we expect to see from you next?
Another beautiful collection.
