Fat Freddy’s Drop – Dr Boondigga & The Big BW – REVIEW

0 Comments 13 November 2009

After what seems like a lifetime, Fat Freddy’s Drop has returned with The Big BW and believe me, it was worth the wait.

From the moment you put this album on and the soft beat of the title track fills your ears, you feel like an old friend has returned from a long absence with a whole bunch of new stories to tell.

The near ten minute journey of Shiverman illustrates why Fat Freddy’s has managed to become one of the finest live acts our country has to offer. With a pulsing beat and funky guitar that drips with style coupled with Dallas Tamaira’s soulful chants makes Shiverman one of the standout tracks on The Big BW.

The Raft reels the listener in immediately with its reggae beats and breezy horn sections that introduces one of the best vocal lines on the album which you will find yourself singing straight away: “And though my people may not be many, we are ready to be strong as one”

Pull the catch is a true dance floor filler that will have you moving in no time with its strong beat and very cool vocal fillers. Alice Russel makes a stunning vocal cameo on The Camel and interweaves with the dulcet tones of Tamaira effortlessly.

The stylish rhythms on The Nod compel you to start partying and cooking in the kitchen as if it were the norm. Will Rickets brings a bit of an old school hip hop feel in his cameo on this track which fits surprisingly well when laced with Tamaira’s harmonies.

The Big BW displays a new depth to an already boundless group. After four years of waiting, Fat Freddy’s have returned and are better than ever. This album is a must have no matter who you are or what your musical taste. Welcome back guys, we’ve missed you.
